If you are not a fan of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) scene, chances are news of “Warrior” hitting the big screen wasn’t cause for immediate intrigue. I personally found myself unmoved by the film’s trailer, that was until I saw the film.
The Plot?
Ex-marine Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy), who’s haunted by a tragic past, returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father (Nick Nolte), a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament awarding the biggest prize in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan (Joel Edgerton), a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father.
But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.
Sounds amazing right? It is. It’s a film that surpasses the sport to be a film that carries a message of forgiveness and redemption. Check out the trailer below, and you decide.
“Warrior” opens in theaters nationwide September 9th.
