BET NEWS On CENTRIC: 5/23/2012

Published by Blair Bedford on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 9:02 am.

1. Think Like a Man Banned in France
Is it a coincidence that the runaway hit comedy Think Like a Man hasn’t been released in French movie theaters or is it a matter racism?

Global Voices writer Fabienne Flessel says it is the latter, citing the fact that despite the Black film doing well in the U.S, it will not get released in France. Flessel’s biggest example is Tyler Perry, writing: “Black actor and producer Tyler Perry’s movies are never scheduled in any French movie theaters or are only released in DVDs, even though he has been used to leading the U.S. box office, as with Why Did I Get Married and For Colored Girls. The French society acts hypocritically, when it refuses to show movies from Black producers who earn millions from conveying a positive message to the African diaspora through their films.” [MORE]

2. Amber Riley Leaves Glee
It’s a curtain call for Amber Riley at Glee.

The actress, who played divalicious high schooler Mercedes for three years on the hit series, confirmed via Twitter that she won’t be returning for next season. [MORE]

3. How Black Churches Can Fight HIV/AIDS
Since the beginning, African-American churches have been the most power social institution in our communities. It’s always been more than just a place for Black folks to worship — people learned how to read there and political movements started there.

But with religion comes serious tensions around topics such as sex, sexual orientation and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black America. Many have charged numerous churches around the U.S. with homophobia, stigma and being all too silent about AIDS over the years. And while these acts of intolerance do happen, that doesn’t mean that all churches are mimicking or condone that behavior. Most important, it doesn’t mean that Black churches cannot and do not have HIV/AIDS within their congregations. [MORE]

4. Commentary: Racist Louisiana School Authority Unforgivable
A school psychologist who said “black thugs” should be “put down like the dogs they are” is facing scrutiny from federal authorities. [MORE]

5. Tyra Banks Pens Open Letter to Models About Body Image
Tyra Banks might have a body the rest of us dream we possessed, but the supermodel recently said that she was banned by several designers once she started developing her curves and that if she’d tried to start her career today, she’d be deemed too fat for fashion. Banks penned an open letter to other models and women with body issues criticizing the industry’s obsession with “too thin” looks. [MORE]
