BET NEWS On CENTRIC: 6/7/2012

Published by Blair Bedford on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 9:09 am.

1. Study Finds Exercise May Not Fend Off Obesity Among Black Girls
For the most part, the key to losing weight is watching what you eat and being active. But a new study challenges that. It found that Black girls who work out and watch their calories are still more likely to be obese compared to white girls.

Two researchers from the U.K, James White of Cardiff University and Russell Jago of the University of Bristo, did an analysis of existing data collected from the National Institute of Health that followed girls in four U.S. cities when they were 9- or 10-years-old in 1985. That data also took into account height, weight, amount of activity, BMI and food habits. [MORE]

2. Zimmerman’s Lawyer: Donations Surged After Arrest
Since Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman returned to jail just two days ago, the amount of donations streaming into his defense coffers have spiked, ABC News reports.

Although an exact figure has not been released, the news organization says Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara claims the typical $1,000 per day rate of donations received by the embattled neighborhood watch captain in the past has increased since Zimmerman was ordered back to jail following the revocation of bond. 3. Artur Davis: Why I Left the Democratic Party
In Part 1 of their interview, the newly minted Republican addresses speculation on his big switch. [MORE]

4. Chagas Disease: ‘AIDS of the Americas’?
A little-known life-threatening illness caused by blood sucking insects has been labeled the “New AIDS of the Americas” by leading health experts.

The said disease was once largely contained to Latin America but is now spreading into the United States due to the increases in travel and migration. Chagas is usually transmitted from the bite of blood-sucking insects called Triatome bugs which release a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi into the victim’s bloodstream. [MORE]
