BET NEWS On CENTRIC: 7/19/2012

Published by Blair Bedford on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 9:20 am.

1. Idris Elba, Don Cheadle Nominated for 2012 Emmy Awards
The nominees for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning by Scandal star Kerry Washington and a pajamas-wearing Jimmy Kimmel.

Idris Elba was nominated in the Best Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his work on British detective series Luther, which also earned it’s own nod for Best Miniseries or Movie. Don Cheadle is up against Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K. and Larry David for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on House of Lies. Giancarlo Esposito was also recognized for his supporting role on gritty drama Breaking Bad. [MORE]

2. Negative Reviews of Dark Knight Rises Bring Death Threats
If you’re a film critic and not impressed with the soon-to-be-released blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, you might want to keep your not-so flattering comments to yourself… or risk having your life threatened.

Reviewer Marshall Fine was among the not-so-impressed who felt the wrath when he became perhaps the first film critic to give the much anticipated superhero flick a bad review at Rotten Tomatoes. After posting, his critique generated 460 comments. A lot of the responses were rage-filled and quite a few included hate speech and death threats. One commenter asked Fine to “die in a fire” and quite a few threatened to destroy his website, Hollywood and Fine. [MORE]

3. Wanna Lose Weight? Keep a Food Journal
Here’s some real talk: Losing weight isn’t easy, especially when it comes to watching what and how much you’re eating. A recent study conducted at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center cut through some of the confusion and suggests that shedding those extra pounds can be as easy as having a pen and paper on deck. [MORE]

4. Romney Surrogate Says Obama Should “Learn to Be an American”
John Sununu, a Mitt Romney surrogate and national campaign co-chair, is known for his no-holds-barred manner, but this week may have gone too far. In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, the former New Hampshire governor levied the mother of all insults on President Obama — and more.

Responding to Obama’s attacks on Romney’s business background and unwillingness to provide more than two years of tax returns, Sununu said Obama doesn’t understand how business or the economy work and basically said that the president is un-American. [MORE]

5. Trayvon Martin’s Shooter Says Events Were “All God’s Plan”
In his first televised interview Wednesday evening, Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman told Fox News channel’s Sean Hannity that he does not regret the events of that fateful night, calling it “all God’s plan.”

Zimmerman used the interview on Hannity as an opportunity to provide his version of what happened in the critical moments leading up to Trayvon’s shooting. Flanked by his lawyer, Mark O’Mara, and speaking calmly, Zimmerman chronicled the sequence of events leading up to Trayvon’s shooting, reiterating his previous claim that Trayvon was the initial aggresor, attacking him and “bashing [his] head into the concrete sidewalk.” [MORE]
