Centric To Kick Off Black History Month 2013 With Soul Train Weekend

Published by Justin D Joseph on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 6:00 am.

With Black History Month just days away, Centric is gearing up for the kick off of a month of special programming that will showcase the best in Black entertainment. From music to comedy, our selection of shows will highlight the leaders and trailblazers of music and comedy that have undeniably helped shape the American cultural landscape.

“Centric viewers and music lovers will get a chance to experience some of their favorite artists, like the legendary late Whitney Houston and one of the top R&B groups of all time, New Edition, like never before with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage,” said Centric Executive Vice President and General Manager, Paxton Baker

This month will see the premiere of Whitney Houston: Legend, an original documentary that delves into the life of the late pop icon through vintage performance footage, recordings and interviews; and the premiere of  Being: New Edition, the latest installment of our on-going series that chronicles the musical life of influential recording artists and groups.

The concert will culminate with the premiere of the UN Day Concert A Message of Peace featuring UN Messenger Stevie Wonder, commemorating the founding of the United Nations. This landmark special held late last year, features performances by Wonder alongside Janelle Monae, Sting, Wyclef Jean, Valerie Simpson, Estelle, Elle Varner and many more.

“Black History Month – today more than ever – is a reason to celebrate our culture, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, especially having just commemorated the 84th birthday celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the re-election of President Barack Obama.” added Baker in a statement. And indeed it is.

Check out the full rundown of themed weeks below:

February 2-3:  Soul Train Weekend
February 9-10: Whitney Houston/New Edition Weekend
February 16-17:  A Celebration of Jazz
February 22-23: Stevie Wonder Weekend
