CULTURELIST// Korto Momolu Talks Fashion For Every Woman
Published by Justin D Joseph on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 11:08 am.
Korto Momolu has managed to achieve the one thing that many Project Runway contestants—besides the machine that is Christian Siriano—have failed to gain: the mass market. Through a series of strategic partnerships, Momolu is producing jewelry, handbags for Dillard’s department store and even stationary.
The designer’s spring 2011 collection was full of elegant yet functional clothing. A huge proponent of her African heritage, the garments and handbags were clearly inspired by the motherland. But not too ethnic that it would scare off Susie Q in middle america.
Not one to shy away from color, her collection was a blast of bright yellow, and electric blue and metallics—that proved the perfect punctuation amongst neutrals
Inspired by her “freedom birds” Momolu wanted to represent a woman that is feminine, soft yet strong. And she did just that.
