RETRO CENTRIC// Missy Elliott ft. Magoo & 702 “Beep Me 911″
Published by Justin Joseph on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 11:00 am.When Missy Elliott released “Beep Me 911″ in 1998, she was already known for her left-field approach to videos. While the Barbie-doll theme is certainly not avant-garde fare now, 14 years ago, it was. Joined by then-girl group, 702; and rapper, Magoo; the video was chalk full of dancing “dolls,” pink garb, toy-like ticking movements, and hair made to look like plastic. In a word, the video was brilliant.
The third single off her 1997 debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, the song reached number 13 on the Billboard R&B charts, and became her second top 20 hit in the UK, behind her first single, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).”
