If you consider yourself a funk music aficionado—let alone a fan—the name Roger Troutman shouldn’t fall on deaf ears. For close to two decades, Troutman, along with his family band Zapp, helped define the genre for a new generation of music lovers and influenced a slew of [at the time] new school hip-hop artists including, Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G, Heavy D, EPMD, Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Kim.

Sadly, thirteen years ago today [April 25], Roger was gunned down by his brother and business partner Larry Troutman, in an apparent murder suicide. In celebration of his life and musical legacy, Centric’s The Hot 10 has compiled the hottest ten songs from the late performer and his group.
