VERSUS// Angela Bofill “I Try” Vs. Will Downing “I Try”

Published by Justin Joseph on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11:49 am.

Singers covering the songs of other singers is certainly nothing new. BUT, executing said cover, and making it a hit, is the challenge. Let’s face it, there have been a slew of covers that induce a “hell yes”, and there are those that have deserved—and gotten—a “what the hell were you thinking”. But of course what IS and ISN’T a great cover is subject for debate. Enter: Versus on Soulsessions.

Originally featured on Angela Bofill’s 1979 sophomore album, Angel of The Night, “I Try” was never released as a single, but quickly became a fan favorite and a signature ballad during the singers live shows and television appearances.

Twelve years later, Will Downing recorded the song for his 1991 album, A Dream Fulfilled, boasting a jazz influenced arrangement and singer’s smooth vocals.

While over a decade separates the two versions, which one do you think reigns supreme. Is Angela’s original untouchable, or does Will’s “try” prove to be the better of the two?

ED NOTE: Today [May 2] marks Angela Bofill’s 58th birthday
