VERSUS// “And I Am Telling You”: Jennifer Holliday Vs. Whitney Houston

Published by Justin Joseph on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 6:00 am.

When you think Jennifer Holliday, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” instantly comes to mind. Recorded and released thirty years ago, the 1982 was the torch song of the hit Broadway musical, Dreamgirls, and became a chart-topping Billboard R&B hit.

Holliday, who took home a TONY Award for her portrayal of Effie White in the musical, won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for the single in 1983—becoming one of the biggest moments of her mainstream music career.

Yes, the song was famously covered by Jennifer Hudson in her Academy Award winning portrayal of Effie White in the 2006 screen adaptation of the film, but the late Whitney Houston—who was Arista label mates with Holliday in the 80s—performed the song on her 1993 The Bodyguard World Tour. Watch as Whitney brings the house down with her rendition of the song at the 1994 American Music Awards (fast forward to 2:15)

Who’s version are you liking the best?
