After 30 years in the music industry, Johnny Gill still has it. The veteran singer brought his signature brand of R&B to Washington D.C.’s Howard Theater, marking what quickly became a homecoming reunion. Gill hit the stage dressed in all white—chest exposed of course—performing songs off his latest album, Still Winning, and songs from his catalog of hits including, “Fairweather Friend,” “Lady Dujour,” “Half Crazy,” and “My, My, My”—all done while handing out white, cologne scented teddy bears.
Between the constant screams and the occasional “Boy, you better sing,” one woman in the audience exclaimed, “Johnny, D.C. will always have your back.” To which Gill replied, “That’s why there’s no place like home. D.C. will always be home.”
Gill has had a very busy summer, as he is currently performing dates with New Edition, and with the Heads of State, alongside his N.E. group mates, Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant.
