Under the tutelage of New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe star Michael Bivins, 702 burst on the R&B scene with their 1996 song, “Steelo,” the first single off their debut, No Doubt. Featuring Missy Elliott, the song became a top 20 Billboard R&B hit (it peaked at #12), and a top 40 hit on the Hot 100 (#32). The single sold a notable 500,000 copies, landing the trio their first of many gold certifications.
