Ten years ago today, George W. Bush was president, gas was $1.62 a gallon, and Nelly released his mega hit “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland—then member of R&B trio Destiny’s Child.
In the spirit of LL Cool J’s 1987 hit “I Need Love,” the under-eye band-aid wearing St. Louis rapper released the lovey-dovey rap—complete with a sample of Patti Labelle’s 1983 classic “Love, Need and Want You”—in 2002 as the second single off his sophomore album, Nellyville and the first single off Rowland’s solo debut Simply Deep released the same year.
The song was a massive success, becoming a Top 10 hit in eighteen countries, reaching number one in the United States, UK, Germany, Australian, and Ireland. The success of the song was so strong it took home the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2003, at the end of 2009, the song was named the 11th most successful song from 2000 to 2009, on Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade.
