EXCLUSIVE: Bilal Set To “Re-Energize” Soul Music With “Back To Love” [Behind The Scenes Video]
Published by Justin Joseph on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 10:03 pm.It’s been over two years since Bilal released his critically acclaimed sophomore album, Airtight’s Revenge. And while most soul lovers have come to accept two years as the typical window between the projects of his musical class, it never the less feels like an eternity when the music affects one’s being. Thankfully, the end is near. His new album, A Love Surreal, finds Bilal exploring love—but not in the corny sense of course.
“Back To Love” marks the project’s lead single, and finds Bilal traveling the streets of New York City helping couples—no matter gender or race—come back to love. The twist? The love doctor—a legal marijuana slanging love doctor—is having problems with his significant other, but his lessons on love force him to take his own advice. Think, practice what you preach.
I caught up with the singer on a rainy day in New York City on the video set for “Back To Love” to talk about his goals for the upcoming album, love (of course) and the surprising person who came up with the video concept.
What’s the goal of your new song “Back To Love”?
To get on Centric! (laughs) I’m just trying to re-energize the market and the whole Bilal world.
The new album, A Love Surreal comes out top of next year right?
Yeah. February 12, 2013
February is all about love, and it seems appropriate for the album to be released during this month. Is the album about love in the traditional sense?
The album [is about love]. It’s about the whole process. Meeting, the break-up, the get back together. I’s Love, but a lot encompasses that word.
So in the video for “Back To Love” I hear you’re playing this love doctor, who ends up being the one getting the lesson—or prescription of sorts. Who came up with the concept?
Actually my wife came up with the concept, and the we took it to another level. It started out as me being a love doctor, but [now the character is a love doctor that sells] legal marijuana.
