Teddy Riley Debacle: Are Wealthy Parents Giving Too Much?
Published by L. Michael Gipson on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 12:47 am.The internet was abuzz last week with reports of producer Teddy Riley (MJ, Guy, Blackstreet), 43, being handed a restraining order from his 18-year old daughter after she went public with curious accusations of assault with a video game instrument (a Rock Band guitar). Riley countered with public statement refuting the charge, lamenting about his parenting choices, and asking for privacy (you see how well we media folks respond to such pleas). The lamentation more or less can be summed up as: I gave these spoiled heifers too much and should have beat their asses instead of handing them the store I didn’t have. It’s not uncommon for the previously poor to overindulge their children when things get good, you’re almost considered a bad, selfish parent if you don’t. But how much is too much? And with poor kids filling up jails and juvys, and middle class kids filling up rehabs and popping psychotropics, who’s too judge?
