ON CENTRIC NEWS// Phylicia Rashad Radiates on “For Colored Girls” Red Carpet + Movie Reviews
Published by Danielle Young on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 1:29 pm.What’s her secret?! At 62 years old, it seems Phylicia Rashad has discovered a youth potion. She looks simply radiant on the red carpet at the premiere of Tyler Perry’s adaption of For Colored Girls. Rashad was joined by cast members Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson and Director Tyler Perry.
While the buzz about the film continues to grow and all-star cast lauded for their roles, the film has been met with a few negative reviews of Perry’s directing. Here’s what been floating on the web:
The Hollywood Reporter’s Kirk Honeycutt called it “a train wreck of a movie” that “utterly butchers Ntozake Shange’s theatrical tone poem.”
Variety’s Peter Debruge said, “Perry has unmistakably wrestled ‘girls’ into the same soap-opera mold of his earlier pics, connecting the passionate testimonials with clichéd characterizations and two-bit psychoanalysis.”
The Huffington Posts’s Jenee Darden said, “I hoped for something better, it was refreshing to watch an ensemble of talented black actresses in non-demeaning roles. The acting is solid. Unfortunately, much of the script is not.”
While the general consensus amongst critics is Tyler Perry’s directing falls flat, one thing remains true: Perry’s films always do well at the box office. Aside from these reviews, we suggest supporting the film, and forming your opinion after.
